What is a Vegan Diet?
A vegan diet is simply a diet that consists of only plant-derived foods. Vegans don’t eat or use any animal products, including fish, milk, eggs or honey. Approximately 2.5% of Americans are vegans. What are the benefits of becoming vegan?
- Great way to lose weight: Many people tend to eat a lot of saturated fats that come from animal products. This includes processed meats, and fatty meats like steak and pork.
- More Fruits and veggies: Since it’s a plant-based diet, you’re more likely to get your 5 servings of fruits and vegetables a day with this diet.
- Healthy diet, healthier body: Eliminating meat from your diet could lead to a healthier body, which keeps heart disease and diabetes away, not to mention that your skin looks healthier, you have more energy and it boosts your immune system, which helps the body fight disease.
Humans are omnivores and this diet is a bit stricter that being vegetarian, since most vegetarians still eat eggs, which is a good source of protein. Critics feel that vegans may be missing out in important nutrients that you get from animals. In fact, a B12 vitamin deficiency is very common among vegans. Studies show that saturated fat also increases testosterone levels, which means that vegans have much lower testosterone levels.
Like every diet, it has its positives and negatives. We’re just glad that Trejo’s Tacos will include something for everyone. In addition, anything that is left over after the restaurant is closed will be donated to a homeless shelter. What a great idea!
